Python Extension isn't reading properly. #25787

Behaviour
When I use the python --version command VSCode says python isn't installed. When I run py --verison it returns the version of python I have installed. I can't run python scripts because I am told that python isn't installed even though it is. When I do ctrl+shift+p and use "Python: Select Interpreter" my version of python shows up, but I can't run any scripts in Python.
Steps to reproduce:
- run "python --version" in the terminal"
